Abstract:
The paper is aimed at evaluating the impact on employment of the application of a new technology in the field of energy production: the LSE process. This process consists in liquefying coal and changing it into diesel and gasoline. This article is based on different scenarios concerning the output of fuel produced from coal in Europe. The results show that this new technology would have positive effects on both employment and dependence of European countries on foreign energy supply. The main reason is that it entails a shift from the tapping of natural resources to a more intensive use of human resources, clearly supporting the optimistic theories concerning the relation between technological changes and employment.
